Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Guanajuato Valley, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A handsome pottery bowl featuring a wide rim and shallow basin enveloped in meticulously painted decoration in hues of black and red on orange. The mesmerizing interior of the vessel features a central tondo of a zoomorphic motif surrounded by dense geometric designs of nested triangular patterns, parallel bands, and undulating striations. In contrast, the exterior of the bowl is left a pale orange slip with one horizontal band of red enveloping the rim. An attractive example of Chupicuaro design in utilitarian arts! Size: 9.5" L x 10" W x 2.5" H (24.1 cm x 25.4 cm x 6.4 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
