Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Inca Hinterlands, Chucu, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. An attractive painted plaque formed from a large pottery fragment, the surface of which is decorated with nested zigzag and dotted motifs in hues of red, gold, mocha, and white. Plaques like this example were placed as offerings to Pacha Mama and Pacha Papa (Mother and Father Earth) to protect the health of livestock and humans alike. The Inca created these offerings by intentionally smashing large pottery vessels and painting the fragments in bright pigments. Size: 9" W x 9.85" H (22.9 cm x 25 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

  • Condition: Repaired from three large pieces. Repairs are well done and unobtrusive. Some wear and abrasion to pigment, notably on the narrow edge. Motifs are still generally clear as shown.
