Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Inca Hinterlands, Chucu, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. An attractive painted plaque formed from a large pottery fragment, the surface of which is decorated with nested stylized U-shaped motifs in hues of red, gold, black-brown, and white. Plaques like this example were placed as offerings to Pacha Mama and Pacha Papa (Mother and Father Earth) to protect the health of livestock and humans alike. The Inca created these offerings by intentionally smashing large pottery vessels and painting the fragments in bright pigments. Size: 7.2" W x 9.6" H (18.3 cm x 24.4 cm)
