Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Chontal/Mezcala period, 600 to 400 BCE. A grey-black stone maskette with abstract facial features - shallow outlines ring the eyes, mouth, and face, with the actual eyes and mouth dug more deeply into the surface of the stone. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3" W x 3" H (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm); height on stand: 3.95" (10 cm).

Mezcala and the vast city state of Teotihuacan influenced each other, and masks seem to have been a major part of their artistic output. This mask may have been buried with its owner to mark their passing and give them identity in the grave. Outside the grave, the dead were sometimes represented in art merely by a mask, or a mask set upon a small pyramid. Masks from this place and period are on display in many museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museo de America in Madrid, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum.
