Description:

East Asia, China, Sui Dynasty, ca. 581 to 618 CE. A mold-made glazed pottery figure created to be placed in a tomb. The figure is a soldier, wearing a distinctive protective covering over the head that hangs over the shoulders, a belted tunic, and long trousers that touch the feet. He stands on an integrated disc-shaped platform. At his chest, he holds his hands together, with a slot visible in the upper one where he probably once held a staff or some other type of weapon. The remains of glaze are visible on the surface, and the figure would have been brightly colored. Size: 2.2" W x 7.9" H (5.6 cm x 20.1 cm); 8.75" H (22.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, collected in the 1970s

  • Condition: Lower legs are restored with new clay. Otherwise the figure is original, with wear to the glaze and light deposits. Whatever was held in the hands is missing, and one of the hands is also lost. Repaired at neck. Weathered surface with nice deposits and some remaining glaze. Nice preservation of form.
