Description:

East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A massive and intimidating steel broadsword or dadao, with a leather scabbard and straps. Dadao translates to "big knife," and these were used for combat and executions. The designs of the broad blades were based on agricultural tools that required two hands to wield. The blade is inscribed below the leaded-brass guard with two rows of characters. The long tang terminates at a loop, and two pieces of wood are riveted to the tang and wrapped with a cloth grip.   • Condition: Fraying and cracking of leather on sheath. Bending to leather tip and loss to one strap. Rich patina on metal areas. Blade has areas of patina. Cloth grip is stained and discolored with some areas of fraying. Engraved characters are sharp.
