Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Lombok Island, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden handle for a ceremonial kris dagger depicting a stylized figure standing atop a slightly carinated, brass-lined base. The figure wears a long-sleeved shirt with a low collar and holds both arms atop the abdomen, and the head features a triangular nose, smooth cheeks, and cupped ears. Copper wire studs are inserted into the eyes and mouth as well as along the verso of the head and body, and a fluted cap topping the backswept coiffure. Rich layers of red-brown patina envelop the handle with lustrous color. Size: 1.25" W x 4.1" H (3.2 cm x 10.4 cm); 5.2" H (13.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Ami Brown collection, New York, New York, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1970s
