Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A splendid sculpture of a recumbent water buffalo, skillfully hand-carved from nephrite jade of mottled sage and russet hues. All 4 cloven-hooved legs folded beneath his broad body, the beast lifts his head, cocking it to the right as his majestic, curved horns lie across his thick neck and strong back. A pair of petaloid ears bend back behind the horns, as almond-shaped eyes gaze forth from above a square snout. The body is adorned with incised scrolling motifs, and a pointed tail extends from the posterior. Size: 3.2" L x 1.3" W x 1.6" H (8.1 cm x 3.3 cm x 4.1 cm)
