East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An endearing lucky rabbit or hare pendant or charm, hand-carved from a coffee brown-hued piece of nephrite jade. The animal crouches with ears flat to the body, its stylized features delineated in elegant scroll and spiral motifs as its pointed snout faces forward. A vertically drilled suspension hole is featured at the center indicating that this bunny certainly could be strung to wear today as intended! he rabbit is an earth sign from the Chinese zodiac and plays a prominent role in Chinese mythology and considered to be the luckiest of the 12 animals. A jade rabbit is also said to live on the moon - the dark craters creating a profile that resembles a rabbit pounding a mortar - stirring up the elixir of life for the moon goddess, Chang'e.
