East Asia, China, Republic period, ca. 20th century CE. Finely carved from a single piece of wood, a Buddha of medicine and healing in Mahayana Buddhism, oftentimes referred to as the Medicine Buddha - the noble doctor who cures all suffering (dukkha) via his teachings - his medicine. Depicted as the canonical Buddha, he holds a gallipot, sitting in a lotus position, facing forward with downcast eyes, a tightly curled coiffure, and characteristically elongated earlobes. He is supported by a lotus pedestal with a row of fu dogs below. Size: 9.5" L x 9.5" W x 19.8" H (24.1 cm x 24.1 cm x 50.3 cm)
