Description:

Ancient East Asia, China, Yangshao culture, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built pottery urn of a hefty form with a planar base, an inverted piriform body with a rounded shoulder, a pair of applied loop handles, a wide neck, and an annular rim. The vessel is first covered in orange-hued slip and then painted with dark pigments to form a single register of a geometric pattern along the body flanked by a pair of horizontal striations. This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River Basin (modern day Gansu Province in northwestern China to Henan Province in central China) from the culture known as the Yangshao. Size: 11" in diameter x 13" H (27.9 cm x 33 cm)
