China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. Beautiful carved circular disc of very hard brownstone. In a form called a bi, these ritual objects were placed in the tomb of wealthy individuals. A lovely example with wonderful almost white veining. Size: 3.875" W (9.8 cm). Comes in two-part custom case. Size: 3.875" Diameter (9.8 cm)

According to The Harvard Art Museum "In Neolithic China, nephrite and other beautiful stones were fashioned into nonfunctional ceremonial blades and ritual implements that were buried in the graves of important people. Many of the same types of jades, such as the disc-shaped ritual implement known as a bi, were used during subsequent periods as well."
