East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, Majiayao culture, ca. 3300 to 2000 BCE. A beautiful and impressively large polychrome pottery vessel, the globular body corseted at the neck and resolving to a flared rim with twin strap handles bridging rim to shoulder. The surface is painted in black and red on a buff ground with a central register comprised of crisscross patterns resulting in diamond-shaped motifs filled with netted lattice and large dots occupying the triangular forms between. Above are thick red and black bands, below a black band followed by a wave band, the neck is further decorated with netted motifs, and the rim is adorned with a red band and black wave pattern; the handles present black fret marks, and the edge of the rim boasts syncopated black frets. Truly, a mesmerizing decorative program. Size: 7.75" W x 7.875" H (19.7 cm x 20 cm)
The Majiayao culture was comprised of a group of Neolithic communities who lived primarily in the upper Yellow River region in eastern Gansu, eastern Qinghai, and northern Sichuan, China. The Majiayao culture represents the first time that the Upper Yellow River region was widely occupied by agricultural communities, and it is famous for its painted pottery, which was regarded as the pinnacle of pottery manufacturing during that period.
