Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A beautiful calligraphy tray formed from white porcelain and decorated with ample blue pigment across all surfaces. The tapered rectangular tray has a narrow, rounded end with a shallow well surrounded by tessellated patterns, a pair of elongated ovoid recesses for holding brush handles, and a raised rest on either end with four indentations for stabilizing the brush heads and handles. The peripheries are embellished with several figures within natural scenes, and the widest end has a recessed cavity that holds a petite rectangular drawer with a spherical handle. The entire tray rests atop a quartet of pale blue lion feet, and the underside bears a statement with 19 blue-painted Chinese characters. Size: 22" L x 4.875" W (55.9 cm x 12.4 cm)
