Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A mold-made ceramic lid, probably from a censer, in the form of a sacred mountain, known as Boshan Xianglu. The mountain is ringed by anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures who crouch and walk around its slopes. Lids like this one reference the Han religion, which included belief in the mountainous Isles of the Blessed, realms of immortal beings. Size: 6" L x 4.25" W (15.2 cm x 10.8 cm)

  • Condition: Intact, with encrustation in the lower profile areas and some manganese deposits on the surface. Two tiny perforations low on one side presumably to allow incense to escape. Nicely perserved form.
