Description:

Far East, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A striking piece of green glazed pottery created during the Han Dynasty, the form comprised of a bulbous body with walls featuring elaborate dragon reliefs and a flared rim, all supported by three zoomorphic legs. During the Han dynasty, the most innovative technique was the development of lead glazing. These were low fired glazes colored with copper to attain the green hue, or iron to obtain a yellow or brown result. Given the toxicity of lead, such glazes were ideally suited for mortuary ceramics rather than those created for daily use. The spectacular form and iconographic program on this particular vessel suggests that it was interred with a very important individual. Size: 4.875" W at widest point x 4.75" H (12.4 cm x 12.1 cm)
