Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1350 to 1450 CE. A charming pottery stirrup vessel of cuboid form featuring 3 birds, 2 adults and 1 baby - perhaps intended as a family, all seated at the top. The stirrup spout rises from behind the birds, featuring a petite monkey on the verso. The Andean peoples were fascinated by the power of flight and birds were understood as sky animals representing the celestial realm that served as mediators between humankind and the deities. Size: 5.2" L x 3.8" W x 7.5" H (13.2 cm x 9.7 cm x 19 cm)

For a nearly identical Chimu vessel, please see accession number 1981:17 at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo New York.

Provenance: private Ferndale, Michigan, USA collection; ex-private Detroit, Michigan, USA collection, acquired prior to 2004

  • Condition: Professional repair and restoration to spout, and expected nicks and abrasions to surface, commensurate with age. Stable hairline surface fissures on underside of base. Convex base inhibits vessel from standing up independently. Otherwise, excellent presentation with good remaining detail.
