Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1000 to 1425 CE. A lovely terracotta stirrup spout vessel with a tall slender spout and two finely modeled birds perched upon the body at opposite ends of the stirrup, their visages with long beaks and incised oval eyes facing one another, their beaks nearly touching. An attractive and well-executed form replete with highly symbolic iconography as birds were regarded as sky animals who served as liasons between the celestial deities and humankind during the Pre-Columbian era.
