Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu/Inca culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished blackware pottery vessel that creates a high-pitched whistling sound when air is blown into the back spout. The vessel exhibits a pair of compressed spherical chambers that share a central joint, each with a round but stable base and a cylindrical spout connected via a bridge handle. Surmounting the whistle's tone hole atop the frontal spout is a stylized bird with a conical beak and incised feathers on the plump body. Size: 7.875" L x 3.9" W x 6.625" H (20 cm x 9.9 cm x 16.8 cm)

  • Condition: Minor abrasions to bases, spouts, handle, and bird, with fading to some areas of black pigment, otherwise intact and excellent. Light earthen deposits and nice remains of original pigment throughout. Whistle produces high-pitched sound when back spout is played.
