Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu/Inca culture, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An exciting blackware stirrup vessel boasting 2 relief scenes each of an encounter between a crab and a jaguar atop a stippled background. Each of the dramatic images displays a 4-legged crab, claws extended in a defensive pose, confronting a jaguar in profile with a slender body and an anthropomorphic head crowned by a semicircular headdress. The vessel itself features a spherical form with a planar base and a pair of conical spouts that span outwards from the top, connected by a stirrup handle. Size: 6.3" W x 5.9" H (16 cm x 15 cm)
