Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A delightful blackware vessel in the form of a monkey laying atop a rectangular cube with a crescent-shaped crop in his forepaws. A slender strap wraps around the primate's thick body, suggesting he once carried a bag, while his head protrudes forward displaying a projecting brow, sizable, annular eyes, a broad nose, and a straight mouth, all flanked by a pair of huge, pierced ears. A sinuous tail extends from his posterior, meandering down his rectangular platform. Monkeys were highly symbolic to the ancients of the Americas. Scholars believe that the indigenous were fascinated by the physical antics of these animals, viewing them as parodies of human behavior. Size: 6.2" L x 4.5" W x 6" H (15.7 cm x 11.4 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s
