Pre-Columbian, Peru, north coast, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. A charming pottery stirrup vessel presenting a globular form adorned with a relief band of 4 monkeys atop a stippled ground on either side. All shown in profile, the animals sit in a row, appearing to bite each other's tails as they extend their limbs forward. The bands are divided by 2 lugs that protrude at each base of the stirrup handle. A petite bird sits below the spout of the vessel. Size: 8.3" Diameter x 10.3" H (21.1 cm x 26.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Ida L. collection, Mt. Vernon, New York, USA, acquired in the 1970s - 1980s
