Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin culture, early Tembladera phase, ca. 1000 to 800 BCE. A beautiful vessel with a globular body and tall, cylindrical spout that widens slightly at top and bottom and features an everted rim. The body features a flattened base and two slightly indented sides, each containing a nearly-identical image of a fox whose large head and bushy tail are clearly evident; the animal turns its face as if to look at the viewer. Its pointed ears and narrow snout give it a dramatic appearance while its hunched posture suggests something secret. The overhanging upper body of the vessel contributes to the feeling that you are looking into the mouth of a den and glimpsing its startled inhabitant. Size: 4.95" W x 9.75" H (12.6 cm x 24.8 cm)

In Andean cultures, the fox is associated with plant fertility and is seen as the bearer of grains and plants. Artwork depicts people wearing headdresses made from fox pelts, thought to connect to religious ceremonies relating to the planting season.
