Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chavin, ca. 900 to 200 BCE. An elegant, minimalist ceramic vessel from a culture that usually made their pottery strongly representational. The body is nearly spherical, standing atop a gently flattened base. A wide spout rises from its center, and has a broad, everted rim. The upper body is decorated with a series of incised lines against a deliberately roughened background; a border of double, deeply incised lines outlines this area, before an abrupt transition to a smooth, polished grey surface on the rest of the vessel. The overall appearance is of a thick liquid dripping in an irregular pattern down the sides of the vase. A lovely, rare example. Size: 6.45" W x 7.7" H (16.4 cm x 19.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from 1950-1960s
