Description:

**Originally Listed At $1800**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Chavin, Cupisnique, ca. 1200 to 600 BCE. A burnished blackware stirrup-spout vessel with highly abstract, incised motifs of a half-jaguar, half-human creature with two heads connected by long, straight lines that meet at right angles. The heads are shown in profile and have teeth, crests, and visible fangs, with their appearances formed by bold geometric shapes. A lovely glossy, burnished surface characterizes much of the vessel, with some of the interior shapes both of the connecting lines and the heads painted with a very pale, matte red that creates great contrast. Size: 6.25" W x 9.85" H (15.9 cm x 25 cm)

The jaguar head was symbolic of the most important god of the Chavin pantheon, Lanzon, whose body was conceived of in Chavin artwork as a combination of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic features.

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected from the 1950s to the 1960s
