Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chavin culture, ca. 900 to 500 BCE. A hand-carved mirror, formed with a large piece of black anthracite. The mirror is shaped with a concave ring base or handle on one side, and a flat face. The circular face is highly polished and reflective. Mirrors were prized by the ancients of the Americas, and believed to serve as portals to the celestial realm, treasured for their divinatory, healing, as well as decorative properties. Size: 3.75" Diameter x 1.5" H (9.5 cm x 3.8 cm)
