Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figure exhibiting human and simian traits, shown seated with bent knees and attenuated feet and balancing with a nubbin tail. The figure boasts a forward-leaning pose with close-held arms and holds the higher-pitched tubes of a pan flute just beneath pursed lips. The elongated head exhibits incised ovoid eyes and nasolabial folds, a bulbous nose, enormous cupped ears, and a rounded brow, all capped with a petite cylindrical coiffure. Remains of an original textile garment are visible along the verso of the neck. Size: 3.5" W x 8.7" H (8.9 cm x 22.1 cm); 10.3" H (26.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Bottom of largest pan flute tube reattached with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Small chips to legs, body, arms, and head, with light encrustations, and losses to most original textile garments. Light earthen deposits and nice patina throughout.
