Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A rounded, hollow, ceramic human figure of the style known as a cuchimilco or star gazer. The figure appears to have both male (phallus) and female (breasts) characteristics and stands with its flipper-like hands raised, palms outward. The head is roughly triangular, depicted with a headdress with three points atop it that look almost like antlers, wide, applied eyes, and a prominent nose. Size: 8.25" W x 14.9" H (21 cm x 37.8 cm)

Pottery from the Chancay culture is often found in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valleys; the Chancay produced large quantities of funerary ceramics in specialized workshops. These figures are sometimes found in male and female pairs, placed there perhaps as guardians of tombs.
