Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. This is a fascinating hand-built pottery cup or jar in the form of a crouching person with a squat body and stylized visage. The vessel rests on a flat base that also forms the person's feet, with his stomach slightly protruding outward and his hands molded in low relief rest in front atop his navel. The chin juts forward with raised lips, nose, and coffee bead shaped eyes. Cupped ears protrude from just under the flared rim, and turning the cup around, the figure's back has a definitive hump shape, perhaps indicating a hunchbacked figure who is perhaps also a dwarf. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 3.75" H (8.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private S.S. collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, before 2010
