Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1425 CE. A fascinating wooden funerary mask of a stylized face carved and painted with vibrant red cinnabar pigments. The wooden panel has a wide profile with four piercings near the chin and forehead. A braided fiber cord is laced through the upper holes for attaching the mask to mummy wrappings. Diamond shaped eyes in white and black are painted next to the beak-like nose. A simple rectangular groove forms the mouth. Size: 12" L x 8" W (30.5 cm x 20.3 cm)
