Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A striking balance beam, finely carved from llama bone and created for a hand-held scale. Of a rectangular form, the piece features a row of five animals on top - four zoomorphs in profile and one with a frontally facing visage. All have eyes comprised of incised concentric circles that match the repeated motif along the bottom. The carvings grace both sides, and the llama bone boasts rich carmel and chocolate brown hues.
