**First Time At Auction**

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden paddle with elaborately delineated decoration at the juncture between the paddle and handle depicting an abstract visage on one side and a dragonfly with two birds above on the other - these were further embellished with red paint - and a tubular handle with an avian terminal - the bird and handle embellished with black pigment. The bird is carved in the round with skillfully incised feathers, eyes, and beak - and endearingly perched upon the end of the handle. Size: 21" H (53.3 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
