Description:

American Southwest and Northwestern Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1250-1450 CE. The Casas Grandes culture is known for its impressive pottery. Indeed Casas Grandes ceramics are among the most accomplished from the ancient world. Casas Grandes artisans imparted their vessels with imaginative graphic complexity and intriguing symbolism. This piece features lively geometric polychrome designs in red and black over the entire ivory-colored surface and a striking visage that likely represents a shaman priest given its finely delineated head ornament. Indeed scholars have revealed that Paquime, the center of the Casas Grandes world, was dominated by shaman priests. 7"T x 6-1/2"D at widest with 3-1/2"D opening
