Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 1200 - 1500 CE. This handsome tripod vessel from the Diquis Region of Costa Rica dates to the Chiriquí Phase. With its tall tripod support legs, this type of vessel is sometimes referred to as a "spider pot" or a "chocolate pot,". This particular example has twisted rope-like handles and legs in the form of finely detailed fish. Each leg also has an open slit that contains a rattle ball.
