Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua region, Casas Grandes, ca. 1150 to 1450 CE. A hand-built and stone-burnished pottery vessel of relatively spherical, white-ground form depicting an abstract macaw. The petite avian head projects from the front of the vessel with concentric circle eyes and a dense beak while a tab-shaped tail emanates from the verso. Black-painted 'feathers' stretch across the body to create the overall bird-like presentation. Two pairs of suspension holes around the rim enabled the vessel to be suspended in the air when not in use to keep it away from rodents. Size: 7.25" L x 5.25" W x 3.8" H (18.4 cm x 13.3 cm x 9.7 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
