Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Casas Grandes, ca. 1100 to 1200 CE. A polychrome pottery olla of bulbous, round-bottomed body, corseted to a gently flaring neck. The body boasts striking zigzag motifs, triangular forms inscribed with striated forms with curled terminals, and bands of parrot visages painted in red, cream, and black hues. Some of the designs are painted in red and outlined in black, quite characteristic of the Casas Grande tradition. Size: 6" W x 5.375" H (15.2 cm x 13.7 cm)

Interestingly, a large number of Casas vessels pertain to the trade of parrot and other brightly plummed birds.
