Description:

Back at auction due to fraudulent bidder from 6/2/2016 sale…

Pre-Columbian, Northern Mexico, Chihuahua, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A polychrome Casas Grandes (which is also called Paquime) effigy pottery vessel, finely coiled/hand built, modeled, and painted with incredibly thin walls (smooth on both the exterior and interior), skillfully painted in red and black on a buff ground as is characteristic of Casas Grandes pottery. A distinctive human figural vessel, its abstract visage is so expressive with finely modeled and painted details - those alert wing-tipped eyes, stylized geometric stepped motifs painted on the cheeks, large C-shaped ears, well manicured whiskers beneath the open mouth, arrow-shaped painted headdress with a tiny abstract birdhead painted at the center, that same form to each side of the rounded jar, the remainder of the body decorated with repeating stepped, triangular, and other geometric and linear patterns. A very special example! Size: 6.5" in diameter x 8.25" H (16.5 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: EX- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos collection, Chicago, IL acquired before 1975
