Description:

Back at auction due to fraudulent bidder from 6/2/2016 sale…

Pre-Columbian, Maya, Post Classic Period, ca. 1100 to 1450 CE. This is a brown ware vessel depicting the god of water molded into the body body, with a fanged expression and an elaborate headdress. Some reddish pigment remains. Tlaloc was one of the supreme deities of the Maya, associated with caves, springs, and mountains; his animal forms, which the headdress invokes, are all sea dwellers. Although in earlier times this god was known as Chaac to the Maya, by the Post Classic period, worship had blended him with the Nahuatl figure, Tlaloc, although there were important distinctions (the Aztec, for example, associated Tlaloc with jaguars). This is a fearsome, interesting piece. Size: 6" W x 9.5" H (15.2 cm x 24.1 cm)
