Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, Canosa, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A wonderful Canosan winged Eros (Roman Cupid), assuming a dynamic pose with outstretched legs, one slightly before the other as if striding or even dancing/swaying/alighting to the ground, right hand on hip, and left hand holding a large amphora. His body is partially wrapped in a diaphemous garment with elegant drapery swags between the legs - navel and nipples still discernible. Other than this revealing wrap, Eros only wears an ample choker around the neck. A wonderful rendering of Eros with ample white pigment still gracing the surface. Perhaps this god of passionate love and physical desire is poised to set the mood for romance with his amphora full of wine! Size: 2.85" W x 5.55" H (7.2 cm x 14.1 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Loss from pedestal/foot as shown, with a stabilized hairline fissure on reverse rising from that area. Loss from arm/hand where it was holding the base of the amphora and possible loss from other shoulder. However, what remains has great form with nice remaining white pigment.
