Description:

Magna Graecia, Apulia, Canosan Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A beautiful double askos, a vessel with a round body and twin strainer spouts joined by a wide double cylindrical handle in the center. Both of the spouts have a punctured surface - a strainer or sprinkler - one set deeper than the other. These vessels were produced specially for funerary purposes, and many have been found in the chambered tombs dug out of the bedrock that surrounds Canosa. Across the surface of the body and spouts are beautiful abstract geometric designs, wave motifs, and repeated linear bands. Near the base on both sides are abstract fish-like forms flanked by schematic squiggles and a makers mark comprised of two concentric circles, the central one circumscribing an "x" or cross-like form. A stunning example from ancient Canosa, characteristically embellished with elaborate decoration as well as a touch of figural iconography. Size: 6.75" W x 8.625" H (17.1 cm x 21.9 cm)

This remarkably well-preserved vase is a superb example of the Hellenistic polychrome tradition associated with the Canosa. During the 4th century BCE, Canosa was actually a major center of red-figure vase creation; however, by the 3rd century, this tradition was replaced by vessels painted in lively pastel hues on a white ground, like this example, with fine line details in black and pinkish red hues adorning the sprinkler spout, the interior of the open spout, and an area of the shoulder. While certain vase shapes, such as the volute-krater, askos, pyxis, and oinochoe, continued to be popular, they became embellished with even more elaborate decoration and figural iconography as we see here.
