Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Palestine, Bronze Age, ca. 3300 BCE. A rare carved stone bowl that is quite sturdy and heavy, perhaps used as a mortar. Carved with a flat base and steep walls that flare slightly outward at the rim. Two raised bands of ornamentation encircle the upper body. Canaanite is the umbrella name for the various ethnic groups that lived in the modern day regions of Palestine and Israel during the Bronze age. The Canaanites were comprised of semi-nomadic herders and farmers that formed small villages and created carved stone and pottery pieces mainly for utilitarian purposes. This stone bowl is a well preserved piece perhaps used by a farmer for grinding barley or wheat! Size: 6.75" W x 4.25" H (17.1 cm x 10.8 cm)
