Description:

Canaan, the Levant, ca. 1500 to 1400 BCE. This is a finely shaped, bronze flat axe head with a lateral flared design and very slight remains of gilding on one side. This piece would be wonderful for a fan of Biblical Archaeology. It is in the style of axe heads from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites conquest of the Promised Land. Archaeological expeditions from 1955 to 1958 revealed Middle and Late Bronze age temples, palaces, and fortifications, as well as a range of artifacts including cuneiform tablets, ivory objects, a basalt statue of a god, and bronze items like this one. Size: 6.75" L x 2.1" W (17.1 cm x 5.3 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
