Description:

Luristan, modern-day northwestern Iran, ca. 1000 BCE. This is a beautiful example of the classic Luristan-style lost wax cast bronze axe. It has four arrow-shaped flares, a small hollow cylindrical socket, and a narrow axe blade. Luristan, in modern-day northwestern Iran, was in a relatively crowded area in the Bronze Age, near the competing interests of the Babylonians and the Elamites. The mountain tribesmen of Luristan served as mercenaries for both of these powers and bronze weaponry had a major role to play in their society. A piece like this may have been made as a child's toy or for a woman with small hands. Size: 5.15" L x 2.8" W (13.1 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
