Description:

Jurassic Period, ca. 206 to 144 million years ago. This is a Camptosaurus dorsal (back) vertebra; from the famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. Camptosaurus is a member of the Ornithischia ("bird-hipped") order because their sacral structure is similar to that of modern day birds; other dinosaurs in that order are stegosaurs, hadrosaurs, and ceratopsians like triceratops. Camptosaurs would have had beaked faces and been herbivores; they stood on two legs and simulations of reconstructions have suggested that they could run up to 15 mph. In life, they ranged from 15 - 26 feet long and would have towered over a human. Camptosaurus was discovered by Othniel Charles Marsh during the "Bone Wars", so this holotype is of one of the original specimens of this species ever discovered! The Camptosaurus lived in a very different Wyoming than the one we know today; interior western North America during the Jurassic period was a shallow, warm, sea. Camptosaurus and other dinosaurs that it coexisted alongside left behind their footprints and bodies in these shallow waters; when the Rocky Mountains were formed in the Laramide Orogeny 70-80 million years ago, the rocks bearing their fossilized remains were thrust upwards and exposed. This is why some of the richest fossil beds in the world are along the edges of the Rocky Mountains. Size: 7" tall, 6 1/2" wide, and 4" deep.
