Description:

West Africa, Cameroon / Nigeria, Cross River Area, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An abstract wooden fetish figure carved in a somewhat "arte brute" style and decorated with fur and hide appliques and nail studs. Traditionally, these figures have served as symbolic stand-ins for ill individuals in this rainforest delta area, and are used to pray for healing. Size: 16" H (40.6 cm); 16.5" H (41.9 cm) on included custom stand.
