Description:

Africa, Mozambique or Tanzania, Makonde people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large carved wooden mask of a wide-mouthed anthropomorphic figure. The head has a rounded top with an elongated snout, almond-shaped eyes, large flared ears, and an ovoid perforation near the eyebrows. A wide mouth displays two rows of large pointed teeth, a light-red conical tongue, and a thin jaw. The interior cavity is hollowed out for wear, likely by a child given the size, and remains of original green, red, and light-brown paint are still visible. Size: 9" L (22.9 cm).
