Description:

Byzantine Empire, Samaria, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. This pottery mold-made lamp shows the clear Byzantine style of using more abstract, geometric decorations than the Romans had in previous centuries. The handle is relatively flat and there is a maker's mark on the bottom. The spout is decorated with a cross and the entire lamp has an elongated shape. Lamps in this style are sometimes known as "slipper lamps" because of their shape. The cross design is particularly clear on both handle and spout, and the discus almost looks like a Celtic cross. Size: 4.45" L x 2.25" W x 2.3" H (11.3 cm x 5.7 cm x 5.8 cm).
