Description:

Byzantine Empire, Samaria, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. This pottery mold-made lamp shows the clear Byzantine style of using more abstract, geometric decorations than the Romans had in previous centuries. The handle is relatively flat and there is a maker's mark on the bottom. The spout is decorated with a cross and the entire lamp has an elongated shape. Lamps in this style are sometimes known as "slipper lamps" because of their shape. Size: 4.15" L x 2.3" W x 2.1" H (10.5 cm x 5.8 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Private New Jersey collection acquired before 1990
