Western Europe / Near East, Byzantine to Medieval period, ca. 7th to 14th century CE. A silver pendant setting inlaid with a gold medallion depicting a Biblical scene under glass. The gold repousse medallion depicts the Adoration of the Magi and the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child under a Greek cross. A similar medallion with this scene is on display at the British Museum (object number 1983,0704.1). This medallion may have been a type of pilgrim / eulogia token, mementos of religious devotion, which were made into a wearable keepsakes or charms. Size of pendant: 1.4" L x 1" Diameter (3.6 cm x 2.5 cm); cord: 21" L (53.3 cm); silver quality: 97.7%; weight: 4.9 grams

  • Condition: Gold repousse scene is not easily discernable due to mineral deposits under the glass. Glass face on both sides is cracked but intact. Dark patina on silver setting. Tiny tear to silver near bail, and small loss to setting rim. Strung on a modern cord and wearable.
