Description:

Near East, Holy Land, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A cast leaded-bronze thurible, or censer, suspended from three chains and a crucifix. The cup for holding incense is tripodal, a cylindrical body resting on three petite feet. It has concentric incised rings on the bottom and body exterior which flares to a rim bearing three perforated suspension lugs that each hold the first link of a flexible chain. Each chain is constructed from several links that stretch between the lugs to a central hook attached to the bottom of a broad crucifix, and a ring attaches to the top of the cross. The flared rim once had a lid with petite perforations to allow the incense aroma to escape, and the chain would allow the thurible to be swung during religious ceremonies. A lovely example! Size (cup): 3.75" W x 2.75" H (9.5 cm x 7 cm); Size (with chain, crucifix, and hook): 13" H (33 cm)
